HEX is used in CSS and HTML. RGB separates red, green and blue (0–255). HSL uses hue (0–360°), saturation and lightness — easier to intuit than RGB. CMYK is used in print design.
Note: CMYK is device-dependent and screen colours are RGB — the CMYK values here are approximate equivalents for reference, not print-ready colour profiles.
Frequently asked questions
Why does CMYK not perfectly match my print output?
Screen colours use the additive RGB model; print uses subtractive CMYK. The CMYK values shown here are mathematical approximations calculated from RGB — they do not account for ink gamut, paper colour or colour profiles. For accurate print work, use colour-managed software like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign.
What is the most common CSS colour format?
HEX is the most widely used format in CSS for fixed colours. HSL is increasingly popular because it is easy to reason about — you can adjust lightness to create tints and shades without touching hue. CSS also supports rgb() and hsl() functions directly.
