About the Percentage Increase Calculator
Enter an original value and a new value to instantly see the percentage increase or decrease, the absolute change, and the multiplier. Works equally well for price changes, population figures, test scores, revenue comparisons or any two measurements.
The formula
Percentage change = ((new value − original value) ÷ |original value|) × 100. If the result is positive, the value increased; if negative, it decreased.
Multiplier is the new value divided by the original. A multiplier of 1.25 means a 25% increase; 0.80 means a 20% decrease.
Note that a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not return to the original value — the percentage is always calculated relative to the current base, not the starting point.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for percentage increase?
((New value − Original value) ÷ |Original value|) × 100. If the original was 80 and the new value is 100, the increase is ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%.
What does the multiplier mean?
The multiplier is the new value divided by the original. A multiplier of 1.25 means a 25% increase; 0.80 means a 20% decrease. Multiply any starting value by it to get the new value.
