About the VAT Calculator
This VAT calculator works in both directions. Enter a price ex-VAT to find the total including VAT, or enter a VAT-inclusive price to strip the tax out. The default rate is 20% (UK standard), but you can change it to any rate.
VAT formulas
Adding VAT: Inc-VAT = Ex-VAT × (1 + Rate ÷ 100). At 20%: £100 ex-VAT becomes £120 inc-VAT.
Removing VAT: Ex-VAT = Inc-VAT ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). At 20%: £120 inc-VAT becomes £100 ex-VAT. The VAT amount is £20.
Common UK VAT rates: 20% standard, 5% reduced (e.g. domestic fuel, children's car seats), 0% zero-rated (e.g. food, books, children's clothes).
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Price including VAT = Price excluding VAT × (1 + Rate ÷ 100). At 20%: £100 × 1.20 = £120 including VAT.
How do I remove VAT from an inclusive price?
Price excluding VAT = Price including VAT ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). At 20%: £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100. A common mistake is subtracting 20% directly — that gives the wrong answer.
What are the UK VAT rates?
Standard rate is 20% for most goods and services. Reduced rate is 5% for items like domestic fuel, children's car seats and some energy-saving materials. Zero rate (0%) applies to food, books, newspapers and children's clothing.
